FLUID NARRATIVES

Transforming Ebru Art into Sonic Notation and Feminist Storytelling with New Media Technology

Fluid Narratives started as Eda Er’s dissertation project and has since evolved into an interdisciplinary platform that reimagines the ancient Turkish art of Ebru (marbling) as a contemporary medium for sound, performance, and visual storytelling. Historically practised and innovated by women, Ebru is a fluid and ephemeral art form deeply embedded in Ottoman cultural heritage. While traditionally used in calligraphy and bookbinding, Fluid Narratives expands its scope into new artistic and technological territories, transforming marbled patterns into evolving soundscapes and interactive installations.

Using technologies such as Max/MSP, TouchDesigner, and custom algorithms, the project explores how historical marbling techniques can be translated into sonic gestures, bridging tradition with innovation. Beyond its academic origins, Fluid Narratives now fosters collaborations across disciplines, inviting artists, musicians, and technologists to engage with its creative methods. The tools and systems developed within the project will be made accessible to those interested in integrating them into their own artistic practices, ensuring that this evolving form of expression continues to inspire new interpretations and interactions.
